Iran-Iraq War

"Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi is the story of Marjane's family in Iran. A big section of the book focuses on her family during the Iran-Iraq war. The Iran-Iraq war started in 1980.
The Iran-Iraq war started because of the dispute between the Shatt-al Arab waterway. Iraq attacked Iran because it has been denied usage of the waterway.
The Islamic revolution began in 1979. The Shah was stripped off his power and the exiled religious leader  Ayatollah Khomein came and became their "supreme leader", taking control over Iran. Because of this, the government has isolated Iran from the rest of the world.Iraq invades Iran and therefore the Iran-Iraq war began.

Persepolis shows that not everyone agreed to Ayatollah Khomein's decisions.

Marji and her family rebelled by participating in demonstrations and breaking laws in regards to restriction on modern and westernized facets of culture. Above, you can see that the family has a TV, a sign of westernization. Despite the war outside, it shows that families still continued to have normal nights.

Here is a video about the Iran-Iraq war in Persepolis
